How to choose the best Theatre or Dance School for your child

Whether you are serious about your child making a profession in the world of ‘Show Business’ or looking at classes as a hobby, there are quite a few factors to consider to get the best for your child.

How qualified are the owners?

You will see many schools which are owned by someone who has trained from an early age and passed exams but never actually performed as a professional.

If turning professional is a potential goal for your child, this should be a major concern. Knowing the theory of Theatre and Dance is completely different to being an experienced Professional performer.

The difference you will pay in term fees will be relatively small between the good and the bad, but the results will be vastly different.

It is also worth considering travelling a short distance to find the best school rather than adopt the attitude that the school you are considering is ‘just around the corner’.

With vast experience as professional performers, we can 100% guarantee you that

NOT ALL DANCE SCHOOLS ARE THE SAME.

So before committing to classes for your child, check out the following.

Every school should have a website, and if they have the necessary qualities, you can bet your bottom dollar they’ll be telling you all about it.

So here’s what to look for.

How qualified and experienced are the teachers?

Some schools will have an experienced professional at the helm, but may employ previous pupils at a young age to teach classes.

That is not to say that the employee isn’t a talented dancer, but teaching qualities are just as important as technical skills.

How is the atmosphere?

Any good school should be more than happy to offer you a free taster class in all of your chosen subjects. This gives you and your child a chance to check out the facilities and the atmosphere.

Although parents will not be allowed into classes, your child is sure to give you honest feedback on their experience.

Medically Qualified for Emergencies.

There should be at least one qualified First-Aid person on duty at any given time. Not that you would expect to have any kind of medical emergency, but it’s comforting knowledge to you as a parent.

Opportunities to perform

Performances can be costly and involve a lot of work for the school, unfortunately for this reason not all schools hold regular performances.

The rewards of performing for the children are enormous. If a child feels comfortable on stage from an early age, it becomes second nature very quickly. The confidence that performances can bring is amazing. Scary at first of course, but at the same time it is exciting too.

A great school will also make sure that performances are held in a substantial venue, preferably a Theatre and not just an end of term performance in the Hall they are taught in.

This Theatre experience is second to none and will offer additional training with all aspects of show production including behind the scenes work, using live microphones, recording backing vocals and the use of professional equipment —the full ’Show Business’ experience!
